this is the best thing you’ll see all week. and it’s only monday, so that means it must involve werner herzog as the internal monologue of a plastic bag in ramin bahrani’s seriously excellent short film, Plastic Bag.
this is truly wonderful stuff (the fortunate result of a kismet between two like-minded filmmakers) and 18 minutes impeccably well-spent. you won’t regret it....

If Filmmakers Directed The Super Bowl (SlateV).
This is massively fantastic. And just perfect pairings:
Tarantino: A whole bunch of Super Bowls, with focus not on plot but on violence.
David Lynch: Giants-Pats (too bizarre for actual words and images).
Wes Anderson: Steelers-Cardinals (sentimental).
Jean-Luc Godard: Super Bowl I, Packers-Chiefs (unabashed love the extreme end...

The Race to Save Film Classics

Martin Scorsese is not just the most avid cinephile, but also a passionate film preservationist. Three years ago Scorsese started the World Cinema Foundation to rescue neglected films from various corners of the world. And a year ago The Auteurs was bestowed with the honor of being a distribution partner for the foundation and offers four of the restored films for free in an...

POLANKSI: The Heart of the Matter →
i’m just going to go into these last two points because they are the most unsettling of your set.
though i agree that the circumstances surrounding polanski’s recent arrest were sketchy at best, i think it is best not to equate the legitimacy of those actions with the morality of polanski’s crime. ever. i was a bit blinded by my admiration for this man’s talents for a few...

“My favorite discovery at Toronto, however, is the deliriously unhinged “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” which was met with laughter and audible gasps during its initial press screening. Although it bears some resemblance to the original “Bad Lieutenant,” Abel Ferrara’s 1992 grungy classic about a drug-addled cop, Mr. Herzog’s redo is its own beast. Nicolas Cage, delivering his...

mini follow up - i do obviously recognize that citi is entirely mired in the problems of the current crisis (duh, the name, all the craziness that has gone on because of it). of course directly after ranting i also read about a certain mets fan and his not exactly cheap tickets being pawned off on ebay. the tickets obviously should go to these crustaceans. the end of baseball stadium rants.
mini baseball rant
last weekend i paid my first of many visits to the city’s two new ballparks. i have been a yankees fan as long as i have been a fan of baseball, but based on my first impressions of citi field and yankee stadium, i may be attending more mets games this summer.
this may have to do with the fact that i hate steinbrenner and his kin basically as much as the many yankee haters out there. my...
