nagisa oshima’s “the sun’s burial” should really be rereleased on criterion. this was my first impression of oshima, most certainly not the last. some of the over-the-top theatrics took getting used to, but his raw vision of post-war osaka slums, an unforgettable scene on a roof at sunset, and the searing performance of kayoko hanoo as a mean-to-the-bone femme fatale, i just know that want more.
